After Diane Leah and I wrote a fun, light Christmas tune last year ("Santa's On His Way"), I told her I wanted to write another one this year, but one based on what we were all dealing with in 2020.
As musicians, we lost our livelihoods, our connections with each other and audiences, our career opportunities, etc. As people, we lost gatherings of friends and extended family, hugs and handshakes, the ability to travel easily, and – heartbreakingly – we lost people, as well.
Gone were the opportunities to celebrate things like birthdays, weddings, and more. My Dad passed away in July and we could only have a small group celebrate his life and honour his passing; all others had to watch online. It was a weird world. It’s still a weird world.
Christmas is so often a time of magic and hope, joy and celebration. In a year like this past one, we wanted the message of this song to reflect all the things that have changed in the world, and all the reasons we need Christmas: something special on which to hang our hopes.
lyrics
(MAYBE WE'LL HAVE) CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR
We’re living in a world that’s not the same
A whole new set of rules and a different game
And though the road ahead is not so clear
Maybe we’ll have Christmas this year
We’re staying far apart and hiding smiles
We’re missing friends and family across the miles
If there is just one wish that I could share
Maybe we’ll have Christmas (this year)
(This year) has been so hard; everything has changed
The world that we once knew has all been rearranged
It’s not just me and you and what we’re going through; it’s everyone
What’s it gonna be when all is said and done?
The birthdays that we missed, the weddings, too
We couldn’t say “goodbye” the way we wanted to
If there is just one thing that we’ll hold dear
Maybe we’ll have Christmas this year
Our dreams of yesterday have lost their shine
We changed our old routines and we found more time
Now it’s December and we’re still here
So, let there be Christmas … we all need Christmas
Maybe we’ll have Christmas this year
